Humanitarian Engineering - How Compelled Do You Feel?

Hello all,   Welcome to the first YEA Blog for…a very long time!  It is now my responsibility to keep this blog site active so I will be endeavouring to do so with regular interactive discussion about matters which I believe are important to the brand of the young engineer…starting with the following…   This year is Engineers Australia’s Year of the Humanitarian Engineer and what an opportunity we have had to practice this vision.  Cyclones and extensive flooding in Queensland, flooding through upper Victoria, massive earthquakes in Christchurch, devastating tsunami in Japan and numerous other less publicised natural events.   What I would like to discuss is as an engineer, when these types of events occur, how compelled and obligated do you feel to provide professional support?  For myself, having worked in a few third-world countries on relief and / or community benefit-type projects, my mind quickly goes to the logistics of the work required to cleanup and rehabilitate.  Sometimes I think if only I was there and available, this is what I would do and how I would do it.   So…how do you feel?  Are you obligated?  What have you done in the past or the present?   Regards,   Michael Sylvester YEANC – Media Portfolio
