Earlier this year Young Engineers Australia National Committee conducted a survey of the engineering industry to elicit views on being Chartered. The committee is pleased to announce that there was an overwhelming response to the survey with over 5,500 responses received. Thanks to all who responded and took part in this survey.
Those who participated had the chance to win an iPad by answering the question:
"What can Engineers Australia do as an organisation to achieve higher recognition of Chartered Engineers/Technologists/Officers within the community?"
Some common themes arose including:
- The current process requires too much work outside of an engineer's normal workload
it doesn't fit with the normal work an engineer does (such as writing in first person instead of third) - There is no benefit for becoming Chartered
- I can progress and work as an engineer without becoming Chartered - why should I do something extra
- Suggestion to make being Chartered mandatory
- The Chartered Accountants have a similar concept but their advertising has been more public and seen as more successful.
The winners of the iPads, based on their responses to the above, were Rebecca Latimer and Justin Sazegar. Discussion forums were also held at most Division offices and an iPad was again awarded to the best response to the above question. This winner was Leon Czechowicz.
The findings from the forums and survey will be provided to Engineers Australia Council for action. If you would like to have your say or additional input please email yea@engineersaustralia.org.au or reply to this blog.

Interesting discussions. I am not convinced employers value chartered status over personnel experience or RPEQ status. Number of years experience in a specific area seems the only important area. RPEQ on the other hand seems to be valued for legal reasons, but it is not required outside Queensland. I am currently in graduate accounting studies, and I also feel the accounting groups perform much better marketing of themselves.
